MICHAEL RIEDIJK – President Accomplished entrepreneur who has founded and invested in several successful green/clean tech and software companies. Michael brings extensive knowledge about bringing technology companies from start-up to fruition. Michael’s companies have been awarded the ‘Obama Champion of Change’ Award at The White House in 2011, the ‘Red Herring Top 100 North America 2012’, the list of 100 most innovative tech companies in North America, and the ‘Deloitte Technology Fast 500’ several years in a row.

JOSE GODOY TOKU – Vice President Entrepreneur with years of experience in numerous business start-ups, investment and real estate development. In 2010 he founded Ocean Pop Holdings, a private investment company driven to new technology ventures and strategies, and since 2012 he is the Vice-President of Oceaneos.

PETER GROSS – Chief Technology Officer With a background in ocean science and engineering, Peter began working on side scan sonar technology shortly after finishing his studies and was the founder of Muse Research Inc., a company created to manufacture and market his innovations in oceanographic sonar. Later, Peter was the senior project manager at Marport Canada, helping expand its product line into three-dimensional sonar. He is an oceanographic engineer and ocean scientist specializing in sustainable ecosystem restoration and development of cost-effective ocean remote sensing technologies. He has also been a science host for Discovery Channel.

FARAH NOUR – Doctor in Materials and Organic Chemistry Materials scientist from Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) in Tehran, Iran, where she obtained her Doctorate and Masters in Organic Chemistry. Farah has been working as Principal Investigator and Associate Professor at the Institute for Color Science and Technology for the past 15 years. Before joining Oceaneos she worked on several projects for the synthesis, characterization, and functional assessment of novel organic compounds, as well as chemical sensors and bioactive materials.

Protocol Development Team

FATIH SAHIN – Marine Biologist Has been an assistant professor at Sinop University since 2011, in the Fisheries Faculty of the Department of Marine Biology. His research focuses on the identification and ecology of phytoplankton communities.

ALI CEMAL GUCU – Marine Biologist Professor Gucu has worked as an associate professor at IMS – METU since 1998. His research involves fisheries biology and management, marine mammals and acoustics, conservation biology and invasive species.

LEVENT BAT – Marine Biologist Has been assistant professor at Sinop University since 1997, and became an associate professor in 1998, in the Fisheries Faculty of the Department of Marine Biology. His research is focused on marine toxicity and pollution, heavy metals found in marine flora and fauna and ecological assessment.

GUADALUPE SÁNCHEZ – Marine Biologist Studied biological sciences at the Universidad Nacional Mayor San Marcos in Lima, where she obtained a Doctorate in Biology and a Masters in Geography. She worked in coastal marine management at the Coastal Resources Center of the University of Rhode Island. Has extensive experience in the fields of coastal management, spatial planning, biogeochemistry, trophic and population ecology, and plankton community biology. Her research is in areas like oceanic chemistry, coastal management and oceanography.

MARIANO GUTIERREZ – Marine Acoustics Fisheries engineer with a doctorate in marine sciences. He has worked at TASA (Peruvian fishing industry), UNDP (GEF-UNDP- Humboldt Project), and currently in Peruvian universities (UNFV and ENAMM). He is a specialist in acoustics of fish and zooplankton, fleet engineering and ecosystem management issues. He is a member of the Fisheries Acoustics Working Group (ICES), of the Research Unit on Exploited Ecosystems (IRD) and of the Scientific Working Group of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO).

JOANNA ALFARO – Marine Biologist Masters in Biology at Universidad Ricardo Palma, followed by a Doctorate in Biology at the University of Exeter. President of ProDelphinus, an initiative that monitors bycatch in Peru waters, partnered with the University of Exeter, where she is a Darwin Research Fellow. She is a professor and lecturer at the Universidad Científica del Sur. Has authored and co-authored more than 40 papers in several topics of marine biology, focused on conservation and aquatic zoology.

ÚRSULA MENDOZA – Oceanographic Biologist Studied marine biology at Universidade Federal de Río de Janeiro, and a postgraduate at the Universidad de Fluminense, Río de Janeiro, with a Masters in Earth Science and Environmental Geochemistry, and her Doctorate at Bremen University in Germany. She is chair of scientists at the department of geochemistry at Universidad Federal Fluminense and professor at Universidad Cayetano Heredia.

ÁNGEL PEREA – Reproductive Ecologist Studied biology at Universidad Ricardo Palma, and a Masters at the Universidad Científica del Sur, both in Peru. Worked as an analyst in Numeric Biology for the World Bank, and as a researcher for CONCYTEC. Member of the association of biologists of Peru, founding member of INVIPESCA and committee member of the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias. His research focuses on the reproductive cycles of pelagic and mesopelagic fish, egg production and stock recruitment.

PATRICIA AYÓN – Zooplankton Ecologist Studied biology at Universidad Ricardo Palma in Peru, with Post-graduate studies in Zoology with mentions in Ecology and Conservation at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. She is a lead lecturer at Universidad Ricardo Palma, and is a member the National Council of Science and Technology in Peru.

SONIA SANCHEZ – Phytoplankton Ecologist Studied biology at Universidad Ricardo Palma in Peru, later receiving her Masters in Biology for her studied on phytoplankton at the same university. She continued to earn her Masters in Biological Oceanography at the University of Rio Grande. She is a member of the Peruvian School of Biologists, with expertise in the fields of taxonomy and algal ecology, with a focus on harmful algal blooms and red tide formation on the Peruvian coast.

LUIS VÁSQUEZ – Oceanographic Scientist Studied mechanical engineering at Universidad Mayor San Marcos in Lima, where he continued until his Masters in environmental sciences, with a focus on pollution control and management in the same university. He is a lecturer at the Southern Scientific University, and is a member of the National Council of Science and Technology in Peru. His research focuses in marine circulation and water dynamics.

PEPE ESPINOZA – Trophic Dynamics Ecologist Studied biological sciences at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, followed by a Masters in aquatic resources at the same university. At the Bretagne Occidentale University in Brest, France, he completes his Doctorate. He has authored several publications and has expertise in the fields of marine trophic dynamics, isotopic ecology and applications of multivariate statistics. His research focuses on trophic analysis with long-term indicators in the northern Humboldt Current system.

 

Consultants

HUGO HERNANDEZ – Environmental Lawyer Graduated with honors in Social and Judicial Sciences from the Universidad de Los Andes, Energetics, and Natural Resources from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Sustainable development and Environment from the Universidad del Desarrollo. Job experience in the corporate development of environmental and water resources, as well as lawyer for several non-government organizations and in the academic field. Currently, he is a lawyer at Terragua and consulting in environmental matters for Oceaneos in Chile.

MARIO HERRERA – Environmental Lawyer and Marine Biologist Mario is a member of Ecotecnos, of the Neotecnos group, a consulting company created by scientists and entrepreneurs, with an important trajectory in environmental services and assessment, where he is a lawyer specialist in maritime environmental law, and marine biologist. Mario has an extensive experience in environmental national and international legislation and maritime conventions, including over 24 years in environmental impact assessment and integrated coastal management. He is a professional with solid knowledge in public and private international law and international legal instruments for environment. He has worked for the Chilean Maritime Authority and in different private sectors as legal advisor in marine and environmental scientific topics.

 

Independent Advisors

AQUILES SEPÚLVEDA – Expert in Fisheries Research Director of Chile’s Fisheries Research Institute (Inpesca). He is the president of the Research Committee and runs the acoustic fisheries and mackerel stock evaluation groups within the institution. His research focuses on the population dynamics of fishery resources, and the acoustic evaluation of fish stocks in the wild. He is a member of the scientific advisory board for Chile’s Ministry of Fisheries. He is a member of ORP, the Pacific Fisheries Management Organizations. He is a member of the Chilean Ocean Science Society.

SERGIO NÚÑEZ – Expert in Marine Ecosystems Marine biologist with a Masters degree in oceanography from the University of Concepcion. He is Chief of Fisheries Department at Inpesca, where his research focuses on the spatial and temporal distribution of fishery resources and climate-oceanographic variations at different scales, as well as research focused on zooplankton. He has lead a vast array of research projects, both within Inpesca and in collaboration with other institutions. He is a member of the El Nino and Climate Variation group (GT-ENVAC) and the Oceanographic National Committee for highly migratory resources and climate change.
